SINSONTE

Climate Change Artist Commission by the Land Heritage Institute in San Antonio, Texas, 2017. Collaborative and participatory audiovisual cyber-cartography for mobile systems and web data visualisation.

SINSONTE was conceived and produced specifically for communities in South San Antonio, Texas. Combining environmental listening, social participation and digital technology, the project encouraged participants to rediscover and reconstruct their surroundings through sound walks, deep listening and field recording.

Using their mobile phones and a dedicated app developed for the project, participants recorded the sonic character of their environment and contributed to a collective archive. These recordings were later combined into a final mix of individualised micro-soundscapes, offering a shared portrait of the area’s acoustic environment.
